Monitoring of the corrosion of copper surfaces and study of octadecanethiol corrosion inhibitor

The patented nano-FTIR technology brings the possibility of broadband spectroscopy from the mid-IR region to the visible region with 10nm spatial resolution. Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, it also delivers extremely high sensitivity, and even in the case of single-layer measurements, it provides artifact-free spectra.

Mapping of surface corrosion by AFM

Optical and AFM imaging of corroded copper surface, including nanometer-sized grains. The unrivaled spectral bandwidth of neaSCOPE nano-FTIR systems enables chemical identification of corrosion products. The strong absorbance of the CuO2 phonon and copper formate can be seen in the spectra. The protective effect of the octadecanethiol (ODT) monolayer, which can be unambiguously identified due to the deformation vibration of CH2, was also tested. The degree of protection can be demonstrated by the absence of a copper formate spectral band around 1600 cm-1.
